About Us

The Long Island Montessori School’s philosophy centers on a multi-age classroom that encourages community and social development. This allows children at various stages of development to learn from one another. Children spend each work period moving freely from one activity to another, guided by a trained teacher. They are taught how to work and play harmoniously with others, developing social skills. Each step in their Montessori education reinforces a positive attitude, self-motivation, confidence, and a love of learning. A student learns at his or her own pace, naturally and spontaneously. Children learn how to care for themselves and their environment. The Long Island Montessori School aims to cultivate excellent work habits, instill a sense of order, and foster respect for property among its students.

Why choose a Montessori school?

Maria Montessori, the first woman in Italy to become a physician, was a leader in the field of early education. She believed children learn best when allowed to use a hands-on approach. Rather than only listening to instructions, Dr. Montessori believed children must also touch, see, and explore. She also discovered children have an inherent drive for independence and exceptional powers of concentration. She observed young children unconsciously absorb their environment. From her observation and beliefs, she developed educational materials and methods to help each child reach his or her potential in all areas of life. At the Long Island Montessori School, we honor Dr. Montessori’s tradition by using her technique and practices to help develop our students.
